How to update your online Job Seeker account with Flinders Ports

Are you interested in a career with Flinders Ports?

Flinders Ports has an Online Recruitment Centre (in affiliation with OneTest) which allows members of the public to register their interest in obtaining employment with Flinders Ports.

How is recruitment undertaken?

Flinders Ports may recruit in a variety of ways depending on the type of position available.  

The Online Recruitment Centre has a number of positions which remain open to collect applicant data.

While we may have no positions available at present, you are welcome to register at any time using the links provided which will take you directly to the registration page for a jobseeker account with Flinders Ports.  

When a vacancy becomes available, Flinders Ports will search the Online Recruitment Centre for suitable applicants and you may be contacted with information on positions matching your profile.

Advertised Positions

From time to time, Flinders Ports may advertise a vacancy for a specialised position. Applicants will be invited to register via a position link to the Online Recruitment System. (All current vacancies are listed below or by clicking on CURRENT VACANCIES at the top of the page.)

How to Register Your Interest

To register your interest you must create an Online Applicant account by clicking on the position you would like to register for. Follow the details on the screen.  You will be asked to create a user login which you can use at any time in the future to login and change your application details if your circumstances change (e.g. contact numbers or new qualifications). This will allow us to search for the most suitable candidates for various vacancies. Please be assured that your details are kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any other purpose.

The system will ask you a range of questions as part of the Application process and as an optional extra you will be able to upload a copy of your current Resume and / or an Application Letter if you wish. If you have scanned copies of your qualifications, please upload copies of these as well to assist us with your application.

Whilst there may not be any current vacancies in the field you are seeking, we use the system as a databank for recruitment so be sure to keep your information up to date if any of your circumstances change.

Medical Requirements

Applicants may be required to pass a Medical Examination and/or a Fitness Health Assessment prior to being accepted for a position. The Medical/Fitness assessments are specific to the position being applied for and ensure that the applicant can perform the duties required.

Maritime Positions include:

Marine Pilots

Marine Pilots are employed by Flinders Ports to provide guidance to ship’s masters for the safe navigation of vessels into Port Waters. The Marine Pilot boards the vessel and in conjunction with the ship’s master, local knowledge and experience is used to pilot the vessel to its destination berth. This is a highly critical part of the port’s role requiring extreme skill and knowledge in order to prevent a ship from running aground or from colliding with other vessels or infrastructure. The role is extremely diverse and can take place in a variety of weather conditions and on a 24/7 basis making it a very demanding role.

As Flinders Ports gets many requests for information on this type of position, the following information could be of assistance to anyone who would like to become a Marine Pilot with Flinders Ports.

A Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency is required to be employed as a Flinders Ports Marine Pilot. This is a qualification held by a seagoing Master of a commercial vessel. In order to obtain this type of qualification potential applicants have to come from a maritime background and would have worked their way to this level of qualification onboard various types of vessels. There are also other requirements that are considered during recruitment.

Marine Services and Marine Operations Employees

Marine Services Employees throughout the State of South Australia are employed on a full time and casual basis to carry out a range of duties including:

  • Pilot Launch Deckhands

Pilot Launch Coxswains

Pilot Launch Coxswains are responsible for the safe transfer of Marine Pilots to and from vessels. They are in charge of a Flinders Ports Pilot Launch and responsible for its maintenance and seaworthiness at all times. They are also responsible for assisting in the berthing of ships by acting as a Mooring Launch, bringing heavy mooring lines from the ship to the shore for the Mooring teams to pull up and put on bollards. They coordinate a range of activities associated with maintenance of Navigational Aids in all commercial ports. As with all operational roles, this role is also carried out on a 24/7 basis.

Pilot Launch Coxswains are required to hold a Master Class V Certificate of Competency and a Marine Engine Driver Certificate Grade II to be employed in this role. Applicants based in Adelaide can enrol in these qualification courses through the Australian Fisheries Academy. Some pre-requisites apply. For applicants in other States, please contact your local Marine Safety Authority for information on appropriate training providers.

Once employed by Flinders Ports, Pilot Launch Coxswains undertake a significant internal training programme before they are classed as competent to safely come alongside a vessel and transfer a Marine Pilot. Pilot Launch Coxswains may be employed as part of a multi-purpose group carrying out a range of other duties as part of their employment.

Pilot Launch Deckhands

Pilot Launch Deckhands work on Flinders Ports Pilot Launches assisting the Coxswain in the safe transfer of Marine Pilots and in running mooring lines during shipping operations. They also assist with other activities associated with maintenance of the launch and navigational aids. Applicants are required to hold a Safety at Sea (or Elements of Shipboard Safety) Certificate in order to undertake this role. This course is also conducted in Adelaide by the Australian Fisheries Academy. For applicants in other States, please contact your local Marine Safety Authority for information on appropriate training providers. An internal competency training programme is conducted before deckhands are classed as competent to undertake work on the pilot launches. Pilot Launch Deckhands are generally employed as part of a multi-purpose group carrying out a range of other duties as part of their employment. As with all operational roles , this role is also carried out on a 24/7 basis.

Mooring Employees

Flinders Ports employs full time and casual mooring employees. These employees work as part of a team to safely secure a vessel to a wharf or jetty as part of the “Mooring” process. An internal competency training programme is undertaken for new employees in this area before they are classed as competent to carry out the role.

In some locations such as Port Adelaide, mooring is undertaken as part of a multi-skilled workforce carrying out a range of other important duties such as construction, maintenance and security activities.

Logistics Operations Team Members (casual) Multiple Positions

Flinders Ports has a growing Logistics Department responsible for providing and managing a range of logistics operations for clients.

As a casual Logistics Operations Team Member you would provide services as a mobile plant operator and a range of other services as part of a multi-skilled team at Flinders Ports (predominantly based in Port Adelaide).

The team will also be involved in rail yard operations at 29 Berth, Port Adelaide and loading and unloading of trucks in the terminal yard.

The role would require you to work shift work on a 24/7 basis.

If you are a person who likes working in a diverse working environment and has any of the following licences/qualifications, you could be the person we are looking for:

  • Heavy forklift
  • Reach stacker
  • CN Crane
  • Medium Truck

Your attention to detail and safety focussed approach will be a key criteria in this role.

There are many positions to be filled with a possible start date of early to mid January.

If you have a current Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC), this would be an advantage to your application.

On the job training would be provided for enthusiastic and motivated people who want to join a growing and exciting business.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake online testing and medical examinations including drug and alcohol screening.
