Channel Deepening - The Facts

  1. In order to cater for the needs of South Australian importers and exporters, the State needs to provide reliable container services
  2. Container ships are increasing in size and draft (Australian trading container ships have increased in size by 54% over the past 8 years since 1995)
  3. Adelaide's channels, at 12.2m, are not deep enough to handle the larger ships
  4. In order to continue to attract direct shipping to the State, the Adelaide Outer Harbor channel must be deepened by 2 metres to a minimum of 14.2 metres
  5. By the year 2013 if the channel is not deepened:
    - $2.8 billion per year of SA trade will be at risk
    - 150,000 containers per year will move by road or rail to Melbourne
    - Road and rail transport accident costs will be higher by $850,000 per year
    - Greenhouse gas emission damage will be higher by $650,000 per year
    - Road damage will be higher by $1.8m per year
    - Employment will be lower by 2,000 jobs
  6. The benefits of the channel deepening to the State have been estimated at between $500 million (including freight, safety, environment and road maintenance savings) and $1.9 billion (full economy wide impact) over a 20 year period - this does not include the value of benefits to the grain industry resulting from the use of larger ships
  7. The cost of dredging is estimated at $55 million
  8. Flinders Ports can provide funding of approximately $18 million - savings from the relocation of the new Outer Harbor grain berth
  9. Flinders Ports set aside $62.4 million for dredging to the Government at the time of privatisation of Ports Corp
  10. In conjunction with the dredging, Flinders Ports will:
    - Extend the container berth by 140m at a cost of $13 million
    - Maintain the deepened channel at a cost of $1.4 million per year
  11. The State Government and Flinders Ports have prepared a $1.25 million channel deepening environmental impact assessment
  12. The earliest completion date has been estimated at late 2005
