As a responsible port operator, Flinders Ports ensures that commercial shipping activities are balanced with consideration for the surrounding environment.

Flinders Ports responsibilities relating to environmental management are clearly defined by legislation. The organisation has implemented an Environmental Management System and is certified to ISO 14001. Flinders Ports, its tenants, contractors and stevedores all conform to a wide range of policies introduced under this management system that includes the following areas:

  • Ballast water management
  • Dredging and reclamation
  • Work from maintenance barges
  • Emergency response plans
  • Loading and unloading of ships
  • Land contamination
  • Stormwater management
  • Purchase and disposal of plant
  • Sewage and trade waste systems

The Environmental Management System provides a framework to identify, review and assess environmental risks associated with port activities which may impact on water, land, air and noise quality. Following an assessment of potential environmental impact mitigating procedures are put into place accordingly.

Non-Cargo Liquid Transfer Practices in Australian Ports

Port Managers have a responsibility to their local communities to ensure that operational activities in their ports are conducted in a safe and environmentally sustainable manner.

Non-Cargo Liquid Transfer operations between ship/shore and barge/road tankers should be carefully planned and conducted in a safe and controlled environment.  Port Managers may audit and monitor the systems that ships, berth operators, bunker fuel suppliers, waste and other liquid transfer operators have in place that are commensurate with this “Non-Cargo Liquid Transfer Practices” document to prevent the escape of product into the air, land, marine or river systems.

This can be achieved through the following strategic objectives:

  • Infrastructure and work systems in place
  • Trained staff undertaking the operation
  • Facilitating the transfer operation
  • Monitoring the safe and effective progression of the transfer operation
  • A co-ordinated reporting system

Greenhouse Challenge Plus Program

Flinders Ports has been advised that the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Challenge Plus Program ceased on 30 June 2009. Flinders Ports was a member of this program which enabled Australian companies to form working partnerships with the Australian Government to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse Challenge Plus was designed to:

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • accelerate the uptake of energy efficiency
  • integrate greenhouse issues into business decision making
  • provide more consistent reporting of greenhouse gas emission levels.

Although the Greenhouse Challenge Plus Program has finished, Flinders Ports intends to continue to record and monitor its greenhouse emissions with a view to increasing efficiency and minimising total emissions.
