Situated 223km north of Adelaide, Port Pirie has a population of over 16,000.

Zinifex Limited operates one of the largest smelters in the world, exporting large quantities of zinc concentrates and lead. Other exports include grain and seeds, with principal imports comprising minerals, coal and ores.

During 2006/2007, 0.537 million tonnes of cargo was moved through Port Pirie.
