Situated 223km north of Adelaide, Port Pirie has a population of over 16,000.

NyrStar operates one of the largest smelters in the world, exporting large quantities of zinc concentrates and lead. Other exports include grain and seeds, with principal imports comprising minerals, coal and ores.

During 2007/2008, 0.569 million tonnes of cargo was moved through Port Pirie.
