Thevenard is 793km west of Adelaide, and 3km from the centre of Ceduna, a town with a population of over 4,000.

Major export cargoes handled through the port include gypsum, grains, seeds and salt exports, and fertiliser imports.

During 2006/2007, 1.809 million tonnes of cargo was moved through Thevenard.
