Adelaide has been selected as the new port to handle loading of 50 percent of Pasminco Port Pirie Smelter’s finished metal, Flinders Ports announced today.

Last month, one of Pasminco’s shipping providers, Project Asia Service, announced that its upgraded vessels were too long to operate viably out of Port Pirie, and that an alternative port would need to be found.

Flinders Ports Chief Executive Officer Vincent Tremaine said he was pleased that negotiations had been successful in keeping the 100,000 tonne a year loading business within South Australia.

“This decision keeps Pasminco Port Pirie’s entire loading and unloading business within this State. And it opens up new opportunities to generate additional import cargo into Adelaide as well as extra export cargo out,” he said.

Mr Tremaine said Flinders Ports handled one million tonnes of Pasminco related cargo every year, including both finished metal and concentrates. “Ninety percent of that business will still be handled at the wharf in Port Pirie, with 10 percent now diverted to Adelaide,” he said.
