Development Opportunities

At Flinders Ports, we have a wide range of port infrastructure, development land and storage facilities.

Overview

We work in partnership with clients on project development options and can offer support from project scoping and pre-feasibility right through to project delivery.

If you have a port enquiry, please contact us at any stage in your project and we will be delighted to assist by advising on the available options.

Port infrastructure

In 2001 Flinders Ports was the successful bidder in the privatisation of South Australia’s ports.

We were granted a 99-year land lease and port operating license for the Port of Adelaide and the six regional ports of Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Port Giles, Klein Point, Thevenard and Wallaroo.

In addition to our lease and port operating licence, we also acquired the port infrastructure at all seven locations. Flinders Ports owns and maintains the shipping channels, navigation aids and berths as well as the landside infrastructure: wharf areas, adjacent land, sheds, roads, fencing, utilities and amenities.

Development land & storage

In addition to our covered and open storage areas, we have land bank options available to clients looking to lease a site or develop a hub facility at a port.

Adjacent to berths 18, 19 and 20 we have around 2.5 hectares of development land.

The Berth 29 bulk handling precinct is rail linked. Approximately 2.3 hectares of land area is available for development.

North of the container terminal site, there is around 33 hectares of available development land.

Flinders Ports worked in partnership on a pre-feasibility study with Hawsons Iron Project Joint Venture (JV) – owners of the largest magnetite discovery in eastern Australia.

The study examined supply chains options to move 10 million tonnes of supergrade iron-ore concentrate from the Hawsons Project site 60 kilometres south-west of Broken Hill in NSW to export markets through Port Pirie. The study found that storing the iron-ore at a new stockpile facility beside the rail corridor in Port Pirie then using a pipe conveyor along this rail corridor to transport it to an existing berth for export was the best option for the local community. The Hawsons Iron Project Joint Venture (JV) project is now moving forward to the Bankable Feasibility Study and can produce the highest grade seaborne traded iron-ore in the world.

We currently have around 2 hectares of hardstand open storage available on land behind berths 18, 19 and 20 at our Inner Harbour facility.

Additional areas of open storage, about 2 hectares behind berth 19 and approximately 2.5 hectares south of berth 25, are currently being leased to port clients on a short-term basis.

Within the berth 25, 27 and Osborne precincts, we have long-term lease arrangements in place for storage areas and facilities for our valued clients.

At our rail linked berth 29 facility, we have 2.5 hectares of hard tand open storage facilities totalling that are currently used by port clients.

Outer Harbor is home to Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal, the container facility owned by parent group, Flinders Port Holdings.

With over 18 hectares of hardstand and around 33 hectares of development land to the north of the existing terminal, the facility has sufficient capacity to service future demand for containerised freight.

Berths 1-4 have been reserved for import, export and storage of motor vehicles under long-term lease arrangements.
